At Filamentive, we’re committed to helping 3D printing users reduce their environmental impact without compromising on quality. Building on the success of our algae-based PLA, we’re excited to introduce Hemp PLA – a biocomposite 3D printing filament made from industrial hemp byproducts.

Hemp PLA combines high-purity PLA with 10% hemp waste, including natural fibres and sawdust, offering a new level of sustainability and aesthetic appeal for environmentally conscious makers, designers, and educators.

What is Hemp?

Hemp is a fast-growing, low-input crop from the Cannabis sativa plant species. Unlike other industrial crops, hemp requires little water, no synthetic fertilisers, and can grow in a wide range of climates. Its versatility makes it one of the most sustainable raw materials available.

Filamentive’s Hemp PLA repurposes waste materials from industrial hemp production — such as fibres and sawdust — which are typically discarded. By incorporating these into a PLA matrix, we reduce overall plastic content while supporting a circular, waste-to-resource manufacturing model, making your 3D printing more sustainable.

Why Choose Hemp PLA for Sustainable 3D Printing?

Better for the Planet

Hemp PLA is a biocomposite filament made from 90% plant-based PLA and 10% hemp byproducts. This composition reduces reliance on virgin, fossil-based materials and lowers carbon emissions compared to conventional filament.

Using bio-fillers such as hemp not only makes use of waste materials but also enhances the biobased content of the filament — an important factor for organisations and individuals seeking low-impact alternatives to reduce environmental impact.

Naturally Beautiful Finish for your 3D Prints

The inclusion of natural hemp fibres gives Hemp PLA a unique matte, textured finish with visible flecks. The neutral, earthy tone adds character and is especially suited to:

  • Sustainable product design
  • Architecture 3D prints and concept modelling
  • Decorative and artistic 3D prints

The surface finish also helps to minimise layer line visibility, enhancing the final appearance of printed parts.

Reliable 3D Print Performance

Hemp PLA prints just like standard PLA:

  • Extruder temperature: 200 ± 10°C
    Bed temperature: ≤ 60°C
No special nozzle required – safe for use with standard brass nozzles

It offers great dimensional stability, low warping, and strong first layer adhesion, making it suitable for a wide range of printers and users — from hobbyists to professionals.
